People amused by presidents on Republic Square

April 10th, 2008 by anush

I’ve been entertaining myself too much today not to post some of the photos of the people being photographed at the presidents’ pictures stand. It was put on the Republic Square during the balloon festival today.
One of my friends said that all the festival and balloons were something that the government should have thought of earlier to distract people from all sorts of protests. Another friend, who is a supporter of Levon Ter-Petrosyan, said that the balloons don’t take people high enough. My dear friend of course would never get high enough to start liking our government.
Anyway… bottom-line, we are not yet in the danger of amusing ourselves to death. This is only the beginning.

This is form of brainwash, encouraging people to identify with their oppressors at a time when their laughing and their endorphine levels are high. The same thing is being done in other countries.

It’s also meant to make people who look at the operation as “just having fun” think that people who point out that it’s a cynical manipulation are unduly critical.

And considering that these people are responsible for murder, you are, ironically, in danger of amusing yourselves to death.

Since the Roman Empire (probably before), dictators have tried to amuse and distract the populace with bread and circuses. Unfortunately, in Armenia, they can’t even manage to find the bread.

Anyway, it’s hard to see the amusement of getting your picture taken with George W. Bush and Serzh Sargysan. Perhaps they should have gotten Stalin and Pol Pot to make the gang complete.

The main point is to show that SS has shaken hands with Medvedev. A bonus is to show that he is not much more petite than the rest of the gang in the picture. Another bonus, perhaps, is to show off his shiny watch.

But, overall, it’s a clumsy self promotion the Armenian authorities are so famous for.
