Old Scandals, Uranium and Conflicts

The espionage scandal in September ‘06 once again placed Georgian – Russian relations under the international scrutiny. As a response to the Georgian allegations, Russia withdrew its ambassador, cut major transportation and postal links, closed some businesses in Moscow run by Georgians, repatriated others via cargo planes and increased gas price to the European level.

Although the increase in gas price appears planned for some time, the rest of the measures taken by the Russian leadership were ad-hoc. Russia was slandered once again in the Western press for its discriminatory measures against tiny Georgia. To be fair, posters placed at Russian schools inviting Georgian parents for a warm conversation about their status of residence, was nothing short of ethnic witch-hunt involving children as bait – dangerous for multiethnic Russia itself.
